More Than a Policy — Protection Built for Riders

Riding in Upstate South Carolina isn't just transportation — it's a passion. From the sweeping curves on Highway 11 along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway to the Blue Ridge Parkway near Saluda, our region offers some of the finest riding in the Southeast. But the open road brings real risks: inattentive drivers, wet pavement, gravel on mountain curves, and the heightened vulnerability that comes with two wheels instead of four.

At Priority Insurance LLC, we help riders throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and all of Upstate SC find motorcycle insurance that goes beyond the legal minimum. As an independent agency, we compare multiple top-rated carriers to find the policy that fits your bike, your riding style, and your budget.

Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Options

Liability Coverage

Required by SC law. Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others in an at-fault accident. Given the potential severity of motorcycle accidents, we strongly recommend carrying limits well above the state minimums. Minimum limits may leave you personally responsible for costs far beyond what your policy covers.

Collision Coverage

Pays to repair or replace your motorcycle after an accident with another vehicle, guardrail, pothole, or any collision event — regardless of fault. For newer bikes and any motorcycle with significant value, collision coverage is a critical part of your protection.

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers theft, fire, vandalism, weather damage, and animal strikes. Motorcycles are disproportionately targeted for theft — popular models like Honda CBRs, Harley-Davidsons, and Kawasaki Ninjas are especially at risk. Comprehensive coverage ensures your investment is protected even when the bike is parked or in storage.

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)

SC has a higher-than-average percentage of uninsured drivers. If you're struck by an uninsured motorist, UM/UIM covers your medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering when the at-fault driver can't. For motorcyclists, who face greater injury severity in accidents, this coverage is especially vital.

Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

Covers your medical expenses and those of any passenger following an accident, regardless of fault. Pays quickly — before fault is established — so you can focus on recovery. Covers hospital visits, surgeries, rehabilitation, dental repairs from accident injuries, and funeral expenses.

Custom Parts & Accessory Coverage

Standard motorcycle policies often only cover the factory value. If you've invested in aftermarket upgrades — custom exhaust, chrome accessories, performance tuning, custom paint, LED lighting, upgraded seats, or saddlebags — you need custom parts coverage to protect that investment.

Guest Passenger Liability

If you carry a passenger and they're injured in an accident where you're at fault, guest passenger liability protects you from paying their medical bills and legal costs out of pocket. This coverage is often overlooked but critically important for riders who take passengers.

Roadside Assistance for Motorcycles

Standard auto roadside plans may not send the right equipment for a motorcycle. Motorcycle-specific roadside coverage ensures a properly equipped service reaches you wherever you're stranded. See our Roadside Assistance Insurance →

Trip Interruption Coverage

If your motorcycle breaks down or is damaged more than a set distance from home (typically 100+ miles), trip interruption coverage reimburses you for lodging, meals, and alternative transportation while your bike is being repaired.

Total Loss / Agreed Value Coverage

For high-value, custom, or collector motorcycles, agreed value coverage ensures you receive the full insured amount — not a depreciated market value — if your bike is totaled. See our Classic Car Insurance page for vintage vehicle options →

South Carolina Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

SC Required Minimum Motorcycle Coverage

  • $25,000 per person — Bodily Injury Liability
  • $50,000 per accident — Bodily Injury Liability
  • $25,000 per accident — Property Damage Liability

Proof of insurance must be carried at all times when operating a motorcycle on public roads. Riding uninsured in South Carolina can result in license and registration suspension, fines, and mandatory SR-22 filing for reinstatement.

Our Recommendation: The state minimums are a starting point, not a finish line. Given the injury risk involved in motorcycle accidents, we recommend at least $100,000/$300,000 in liability coverage, plus uninsured motorist, MedPay, and comprehensive coverage on any bike.

Riding Risks in Upstate South Carolina

Deer Crossings

Upstate SC has a dense deer population. Dawn and dusk riding in rural areas — especially through Pickens, Oconee, and Laurens counties — carries real risk. Comprehensive coverage protects you if you strike a deer.

Mountain Road Hazards

Gravel, leaves, and sand on curves are common on Highway 11, Highway 25, and the roads through Pickens and Oconee counties. Collision coverage is essential for riders who enjoy these routes.

Distracted Drivers

Urban riding near I-85, I-385, and downtown Greenville puts you in proximity to heavy, often distracted traffic. Strong liability and MedPay limits are critical in these environments.

Seasonal Riding Conditions

While South Carolina's riding season is long, fall brings leaves on the road and early darkness. Comprehensive coverage also protects your stored bike during winter months against theft and weather damage.

Theft Risk

Urban and suburban parking situations in Greenville and Spartanburg put motorcycles at theft risk year-round. Comprehensive coverage is your primary protection against this risk.

Motorcycle Safety in South Carolina

Wearing a helmet is required by South Carolina law for all riders and passengers. Beyond the legal requirement, proper safety gear — including full-face helmets, riding jackets, gloves, and boots — dramatically reduces injury severity. Some carriers offer discounts to riders who can demonstrate completion of safety training courses. Ask your Priority Insurance agent about available safety-related discounts during your quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is motorcycle insurance more expensive than car insurance?

Motorcycle insurance is often less expensive than auto insurance in South Carolina, though this depends on your riding history, bike type, age, and coverage levels. Sport bikes typically cost significantly more than cruisers or touring bikes. Get your quote →

  • Do I need motorcycle insurance year-round in South Carolina?

SC requires insurance on any registered vehicle. If your bike is stored for winter, you may be able to suspend some coverages — but we recommend keeping comprehensive coverage active year-round to protect against theft and weather damage even when you're not riding.

  • Does my auto insurance cover my motorcycle?

No. Auto insurance policies do not cover motorcycles. You need a separate motorcycle-specific policy regardless of whether you already have auto insurance.

  • What if I drop my motorcycle in a parking lot?

A drop or tip-over in a parking lot is considered a collision event. If you have collision coverage on your motorcycle policy, the resulting damage would be covered (subject to your deductible). Without collision coverage, you'd pay out of pocket.

  • Can I get insurance for my custom-built motorcycle?

Yes. We work with specialty carriers that can insure custom-built, heavily modified, and one-of-a-kind motorcycles. Agreed value coverage is available to ensure you're compensated for the bike's true worth. Contact us to discuss your custom build →

  • Does motorcycle insurance cover me if I'm hit while parked?

If another vehicle hits your parked motorcycle and leaves the scene (hit-and-run), your uninsured motorist property damage coverage would typically apply. Comprehensive coverage may also apply depending on the circumstances.

  • Can I add a passenger to my motorcycle policy?

Your motorcycle policy should include guest passenger liability to cover passengers injured in an accident. Make sure this is included — it's not always automatic. Ask your Priority Insurance agent to confirm.
