Golf Carts Have Outgrown the Fairway — Make Sure Your Coverage Has Too

Golf carts are no longer limited to the 18th hole. Across Upstate South Carolina, golf carts have become a regular part of daily life in planned communities, gated neighborhoods, resort developments, private properties, and even on certain designated public roads. With more carts in more places, the risk of accidents, theft, and liability has grown significantly — and the coverage gaps in standard homeowner's and auto policies have become a serious financial exposure for many cart owners.

At Priority Insurance LLC, we help golf cart and low-speed vehicle owners in Greenville, Simpsonville, Mauldin, and throughout Upstate SC find the right dedicated coverage at an affordable price. As an independent agency, we compare options across multiple carriers to find your best fit.

Why Your Existing Insurance May Not Be Enough

❌ Homeowner's Insurance Limitations

Many golf cart owners assume their homeowner's policy covers their cart. While it may provide limited coverage for a cart operated exclusively on your own private property, coverage typically stops at your property line. Accidents on community roads, golf courses, or shared paths are excluded. Theft away from your property is frequently excluded. Custom modifications and accessories are often not covered.

❌ Auto Insurance Exclusions

Standard auto insurance policies explicitly exclude golf carts and low-speed vehicles in most cases. Your car insurance will not protect you when you're behind the wheel of your cart — not on the road, not on a path, not anywhere. A dedicated golf cart insurance policy is the only way to eliminate these gaps.

Golf Cart Insurance Coverage Options

Liability Coverage

Liability is the most critical component of any golf cart policy. If you cause an accident that injures another person or damages someone else's property, liability coverage pays for the resulting medical bills, repairs, and legal costs. This is especially important in communities where carts share paths with pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.

Collision Coverage

Pays for damage to your golf cart after it's involved in an accident with another vehicle, a cart, a tree, a structure, or any other object. Cart accidents happen more often than owners expect — backing into another cart, misjudging a turn, or encountering unexpected terrain can all result in costly damage.

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers theft (golf carts are a high-theft item, particularly in open communities and resort areas), vandalism, fire and electrical damage (especially relevant for electric carts), weather damage including hail and flooding, and animal strikes on cart paths.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Even on community roads and paths, you can be struck by an uninsured driver operating another vehicle. UM coverage protects you from out-of-pocket costs when the responsible party can't pay.

Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

MedPay covers medical expenses for you and your passengers following a golf cart accident, regardless of fault. Given that golf carts lack the structural protection of enclosed vehicles, occupant injuries can be more severe than expected and medical bills can mount quickly.

Custom Parts & Accessories Coverage

Owners regularly invest thousands in custom features including lifted suspensions, oversized tires, custom paint, premium audio systems, LED lighting packages, upgraded seats, extended roofs, and storage systems. Standard policies may only cover factory value — custom parts coverage protects your upgrades. Document all modifications at quote time.

Roadside Assistance

Even on a cart, being stranded with a dead battery or mechanical issue is frustrating. Roadside assistance coverage provides help when you need it. See our Roadside Assistance Insurance →

South Carolina Golf Cart Laws and Insurance Requirements

Where Golf Carts Can Legally Operate (S.C. Code § 56-2-105)

  • Secondary highways and streets where the speed limit is 35 mph or less
  • During daylight hours only
  • Within a four-mile radius of where the owner resides or the golf course
  • Local municipalities may pass ordinances allowing additional golf cart use

Required equipment for road operation: Headlights and taillights, turn signals, horn, rearview mirrors, seat belts, and a slow-moving vehicle emblem. Golf carts operated on public roads must be registered with the SCDMV and display a golf cart permit.

Insurance requirement: South Carolina requires liability insurance for golf carts operated on public roads. Even where insurance is not technically mandated (private community paths, golf courses), liability coverage is strongly recommended to protect yourself from financial exposure.

Golf Carts and Low-Speed Vehicles — Understanding the Difference

Golf Carts are designed for operation at lower speeds (typically under 20 mph) and are regulated separately from motor vehicles.

Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) are four-wheeled, electric-powered vehicles with a top speed between 20 and 25 mph. LSVs are classified as motor vehicles in South Carolina, must meet federal safety standards, must be registered and titled, and must be insured with standard auto insurance coverage minimums. If your "golf cart" is actually an LSV, you need a policy that meets SC motor vehicle requirements — not just a basic golf cart policy.

Golf Cart Communities in Upstate South Carolina

Golf cart use is especially common in planned communities with golf amenities, lake communities along Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee, resort communities in Oconee and Pickens counties, and senior living communities throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson counties. If you live in or frequent any of these areas, a dedicated golf cart policy isn't optional — it's essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does my homeowner's insurance cover my golf cart?

Homeowner's policies may cover a golf cart used strictly on your own property with limited liability protection. They typically exclude coverage for accidents on community roads, golf courses, or shared paths — anywhere off your private property. A dedicated golf cart policy provides the complete protection you actually need. Get a quote →

  • Is golf cart insurance required in South Carolina?

SC requires liability insurance for golf carts operated on public roads. Even where technically not required (private golf courses, community paths), liability coverage is strongly recommended to protect yourself from financial exposure in case of an accident.

  • How much does golf cart insurance cost?

Golf cart insurance is very affordable, typically ranging from $75–$300 per year for basic liability and comprehensive coverage. Custom carts and higher coverage limits will increase the premium. Request your personalized quote →

  • Can I insure a custom or lifted golf cart?

Yes. We can cover custom golf carts including all aftermarket accessories and modifications. Be sure to document and disclose all upgrades when requesting a quote — coverage for custom parts needs to be specifically included in your policy.

  • What's the difference between a golf cart and a low-speed vehicle (LSV)?

Golf carts typically operate at under 20 mph and are regulated separately from motor vehicles. LSVs have a top speed of 20–25 mph, are classified as motor vehicles in SC, and must meet federal safety standards with full vehicle registration and insurance. • Does golf cart insurance cover theft from a golf course or community parking area?

Yes — with comprehensive coverage, theft from a golf course, community parking area, or anywhere else outside your home is covered. This is one of the key advantages of a dedicated policy over relying on your homeowner's insurance.
